Recommended level: some painting experience is recommended
>> Please note: This workshop largely takes place outdoors. Participants will need to be able to walk short distances to each painting location while carrying their equipment & gear.
I invite you to join this special 5-day plein air workshop to learn from the master of color: Mother Nature. Working en plein air refers to the practice of painting the landscape directly outdoors, which familiarizes you with principles like proportion, tonality, edge, and color within a setting that is a little less controlled than your usual studio space. We will study the behaviors of light and its impact on each object within a setting or around a subject matter.
The first day of the workshop begins in the studio, followed by outdoor excursions to four different locations, providing you with different challenges to equip you with what you might encounter outside in your own practice. You will learn to ‘read’ colors as they are, understand their relationship to each other, and mix color accurately. This will enable you to recreate what is in front of you and capture the curiosities within a landscape, that can make it so charming to bring back into your home.
While I will share my approach to working with a fully expanded color palette, you may also opt to work with a limited amount of colors based on the Zorn Palette. For painters with less experience, this simplifies the transition to painting directly from nature while also learning about color unification. Throughout this course, I will demonstrate my full plein air painting process as well as working one-on-one with you, as you are encouraged to push your considerations of composition and finish.
Location: These sessions are held at Dutch Atelier of Realist Art, Haarlem. The first day of the workshop will take place indoors at the DARA studio. For the remainder of the course, we will work at a different location each day in or around Haarlem. We meet outdoors at a central meeting point, and then walk a short distance as a group to the day's painting site.
The doors are opened at 9:00 on Monday and for the remainder of the course we will meet between 8:30-8:45. Sessions starts at 9:30-17:00. These sessions are completely non-profit, participation costs €695,-* (there is no additional VAT (BTW) fee).
* If the workshop is full, and a student has not paid the full workshop cost within 5 business days of the deadline, the student's registration is cancelled and the space is offered to someone on the waiting list. If the workshop is not full, a €10 late fee is added each week that the payment is overdue.
